Vacaville

Vacaville, CA

Located along Interstate 80 in Northern California nestled between Sacramento and San Francisco sits the city of Vacaville. Much smaller than those cities, Vacaville is home to just about 100,000 people. Located just an hour east of the Pacific coast, our city offers locals — and visitors alike — sunny days at the beach without the hustle and bustle of the nearby big cities.

Vacaville has a rich past full of settlers, pioneers, and farmers that shaped the region into what it is today. The namesake of our city is Manuel Vaca, who sold the land to William McDaniel in 1851 with the condition that one square mile of the area would be reserved for use as a township. Vaca did not understand English very well and actually sold 1 square league, which translated into 9 square miles. This township became known as Vacaville and officially became the city we all know and love over 40 years later in 1892. During the next century, the community of Vacaville became known as the fruit capital of California as people across the nation sought to buy fruit and nuts from this once small town.

The world-famous Nut Tree road stop was started in Vacaville almost 90 years ago as a fruit and nut stand built under a walnut tree. As time went on and Interstate 80 was built, this little fruit stand grew into what became known as The Nut Tree. This once tiny fruit stand expanded into a full restaurant, bakery and shops. The Nut Tree Railroad transports visitors to and from the fly-in Nut Tree Airport. The place became famous for offering a break from the road when heading between San Francisco and Sacramento. Today the kids can enjoy a Merry-Go-Round, train ride and a life-sized checkerboard. At the peak of its popularity, visitors included Queen Elizabeth II, and Presidents Nixon and Reagan.

In recent months, Vacaville has been pushing for an expansion of biotechnology within the region with the goal of making the city “the largest biotech hub in the world” The city currently serves as one of the world’s leading biotech regions with life-science giants Genetech, Alza, and Chiron residing here. The initiative is to make Vacaville as attractive as possible to biotech companies, which will provide jobs to the region and bolster the appearance of Vacaville as a world leader in biotechnology.
